KWE’s quick guide to classic car insurance

Many of our Jaguar XJS customers seek our advice on classic car insurance, and no wonder - it’s a rather different requirement from normal car insurance.

It’s important you consult a reputable broker who specialises in classic car insurance, in order to get the best possible cover for your classic car. We would recommend researching the following insurance companies, but there are, of course, other reputable brokers available:

  • Peter James
  • Lancaster
  • Peter Best
  • Adrian Flux

We would highly recommend going for ‘Replacement Value’ insurance cover, in case of unexpected damage, such as a collision or accident as you drive your freshly-restored classic away from KWE! This helps to overcome issues relating to the ‘book’ value that insurers sometimes offer, which might be a tenth of what you’ve just spent.

The above insurers provide specialist advice, and really know their stuff when it comes to classic cars. While they might offer only a limited mileage policy (typically 6,000 miles per year), they should be fine with insuring the car for a more accurate replacement value. KWE can confirm

Thinking about restoring a classic Jaguar XJS? Well now’s a very good time, as this model is becoming an increasingly good investment opportunity. But how can you ensure you’re getting a good deal? And what can be done to minimise restoration costs? This post aims to shed some light on what to look out for when buying an XJS; it could save you a great deal of time and money!

Not all about initial impressions

First of all, it’s important to consider that sellers – in particular garages and dealers – will have gone to some trouble to make the car look pristine on the outside; but it is very unlikely that a seller will have done a proper restoration-quality repair of rusted areas. Therefore, a perfect-looking car is often in much worse condition than one with visible rust, which has not yet been ‘tarted-up’.

Overcome the fear of rust

As with all

Winter can be a difficult time for any car owner, as the cold weather and icy conditions puts an extra strain on the vehicle. To help ensure your classic Jaguar runs smoothly during the winter months, we’ve put together a list of our top tips:

1. Fit winter tyres

The XJS is not best suited to snowy winter weather, due to its relative heaviness and rear wheel drive. Fitting winter tyres, however, will dramatically improve your ability to drive in snow and ice. An example is Avon Ice Touring, typically £85 per tyre plus fitting. As an alternative, try reducing the tyre pressure by about 10%, creating a greater surface area to grip on the roads.

2. Avoid salty roads

Easier said than done at this time of year. If you do drive on salty roads, quickly wash off any salt/mud residue in the wheel arches and sill ends as soon as possible. For

KWE Jaguar offers specialist leather treatment and valeting for your classic car. This video provides an example of how we can restore your classic motor back to its former glory.

We helped spruce up this late, four litre Jaguar XJS, completely revamping its worn-out interior whilst carefully valeting its exterior and engine bay. The results, we think you’ll agree, are impressive.

  1. Deep clean and feed – grime removed, leather more supple, but wear marks will still be evident (approx £80 per seat)
  2. Clean and spray re-dye, and feed – leather is supple and looks like new (approx £350 per seat)
  3. Repair of nicks and worn areas (as addition to 2 above) – special treatment to build up worn-away dye. Small nicks can be masked.

We can’t repair stitching or broken piping except by renewing leather (approx £600 per seat including removal and replacement). Some leather is too worn to be successfully
