Why the XJS is best!

When choosing a classic car to cherish we think one needs to consider the following:

  • Heart factor – do you, would you, love it?
  • Performance & Comfort – do you want the road-racer feel, the comfortable old classic, or something in-between?
  • Wow factor – how many heads do you want to turn?
  • Useability
  • Reliability
  • Long or short distances?
  • Cost to buy, cost to maintain
  • Appreciating value?

The XJS is easy to love. The looks are unique, so if you like individuality the XJS wins. The interior is sensible and, well, classic. No array of confusing knobs and buttons, yet you have everything you need – air conditioning, good brakes, tough engines, and the most comfortable seats ever!

The XJS is pretty fast if you want it to be. 140+ (if you’re in Germany…), 0-60 under 8 seconds, and manual gearbox conversions are straightforward if you want to stir some gears. But its big benefit is comfort. Super seats, great driving position, good visibility, and effortless soaking up of road bumps.

Your XJS will be the one that gets all the looks at petrol forecourts, rallies and car parks, leaving modern German euroblobs in the dust. It’s a great feeling to have people check you out and give a thumbs up!

The XJS is really easy to own and drive. The surprisingly big boot means it can be a shopping car as well as a holiday trip car. Easy to start, great road feel, no fiddly things to have to remember.

Regularly maintained, the XJS is reliable, contrary to some opinions. The six cylinder engines are particularly easy to keep running, and the V12 is fundamentally strong, not over-stressed and doesn’t wear out until well over 150,000 miles.

The XJS is good for any sort of trip. Quiet and comfortable for longer journeys, yet relatively nippy and fun for quick runs into town. Fuel consumption is not awful for such powerful engines compared with modern gas-guzzling SUVs.

Unlike E Types, it is quite cheap to get into owning an XJS: £20k will get you a very good one needing very little work. Maintenance is not much more than a modern car, though to be fair it is needed more frequently. Insurance is usually low, and the road tax is £295 per year.

Though owning an XJS is not an ideal investment platform, prices have consistently risen by 5 – 10% per year.
